Research Interests
I am a clinician –scientist with background in Internal Medicine, Endocrinology and Public Health. M research interests are in the areas of diabetes, obesity, and nutrition particularly among Latinos living in the U.S. I have special interest on issues related to health disparities and acculturation associated with chronic health conditions in those populations. I am currently developing a dietary and physical activity intervention using electronic mobile devices (cell phones and PDA’s) to prevent obesity among Spanish and English-speaking Latinos with overweight. I am also a Co-PI’s along with SDSU in the Study of Latinos (SOL study) http://www.cscc.unc.edu/hchs/ and the director of Taking Control of Your Diabetes Latino initiative (TCOYD) since 2003.
